Around the Farm

Around the Farm

A rough dig into the ground,

community everywhere,

with frogs, plants and animals.

   Planting trees and dog weed

The “Blaring burning” sun,
Frogs everywhere
They were as “green as a fresh leaf”
Without trees, soil will get into the water making it look like chocolate milk,

the fish can’t see making it impossible for them to find food.

Population including many different types of birds, many species of plants, bugs, and people.

I felt very lucky that I got to help the environment,

beautiful land, wonderful views, amazing pictures

In June everything will look really pretty.

Finally you fill in your hole

that you dug into the ground.

By Jadyn Murray

On Thursday June 16th our class travelled to a farm out side of Tillisonberg, this farm was owned to Robin Barker-James. Our class went because Mr Barker-James has transformed some of his farm into Trenches that men fighting in WW1 and WW2  would have had to fight in.
Our class has recently been studding WW1 and this was a perfect opportunity to Learn what the men felt like when they were actually in the war. WW1 occurred in 1914 and lasted until November of 1918. WW2 occurred in 1939 and ended in 1945.

“I’m scared, walking, looking around. I’m nervous – all I can think about is am I going to be killed soon, could this be the last time I ever get to talk to my friends or see my family, could this be the end?. It is very hot out carrying around almost my entire body weight ,Sweating
,dropping my helmet off my head at least once every 5 minutes. It is so hard getting around these places especially  with the little room and many people in it. Finally the Canadians try to take back the Lewis gun but unfortunately  do not achieve,  everyone died except for three Germans, Meaning the War was over.”

I learnt that living in the trenches would be a horrible thing to do in real life. I am very glad that my family and friends family’s did not have to go through that. One part that would bother me would be the helmet’s (they kept falling off people’s heads) and getting shot and having to move back and forth between spots was very hot. As well as when you are at the back of the line and the people in the front wouldn’t move. It was scorching hot outside wearing a sweater and splash pants. But other than the minor things I think yesterday was more fun than sitting in class learning about these things when we got to learn hands on at Robin Barker-James’s farm.

Have you ever wanted to make a tessellation art? follow these steps to learn how to make a masterpiece of
your own.

Materials:
-Card stock paper shaped as a parallelogram
-Pencil
-Scissors
-Tape
-Paper (45 x 30)
-Pencil Crayons: back, green, pink,blue, brown

Steps:
To create the shape you have to:
1. Cut out a card stock paper shaped like a rhombus.

2 Use a pencil draw a body from one end to the other by drawing 2 legs and a belly.

3.Cut out the body part, then using clear tape tape the body to the opposite side of the rhombus.

4. With that you see what the shape looks like, and decide the design

Second Steps:
To create the art:
1. Start in the middle and trace your shape.

2. Keep tracing your shape, make sure you have your shape is together very tight.

3. Once you have covered your sheet with your shape, you can start colouring your art.

4. At the bottom of the cats feet colour it green, to look like grass.

5.  Draw a back on the cat. Then colour the cat brown.

6.  Colour the backround blue like the sky.

7. In pink colour a color around the cats neck Finally in black  and pink draw a food dish and colour the inside
brown like cat food.

8. Colour each  tessellation the same as that, and then you will have a full tessellation art masterpiece.

Helpful Hints
When you cut out your shape be very careful, when you tape the cutout to the other side make sure there is
only a little space or know space between (Your art will not tessellate with a large space taped to it).
Coloring may take a long time to do but it is worth it, if you make it really neat.
Take your time doing the art, rushing will make it look worse.

Follow these steps and you too can create your own cool looking art.

Book Thief Conflict

The book “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak is  about a Little Girl named Liesel Meminger who is a communist. She went to live with foster parents Hans and Rosa Hubermann. Hans was a solider in WW1 and WW2; Rosa used to clean and iron the mayor and his wife’s clothes, but she got fired.Liesel’s best friend is a boy named Rudy Steiner, he lives with his parents Mr (Alex) and Mrs Steiner, as well as his siblings. Both Liesel and Rudy’s papa’s went off to the Russian War, recently in the book.

This picture reminds me of Hans in WW1 or WW2 with his friends.

Character Vs Character
In the book “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak,  there are many examples of conflict. One example of conflict happens at the Steiner family house. Two odd men show up at Alex Steiner’s house wanting to take his son Rudy Steiner to a special school away from home. Alex refused right away and said absolutely not. The two men did not like that answer so they decided to send Alex away to fight in the Russian war. In this type of conflict the protagonist is Alex Steiner and the  antagonist is the two odd men. I think that Rudy will try to make a deal with the two men, by saying that if I go to the special school, can my dad return home from the war.

This picture reminds me of Alex Steiner, arriving to the war in his uniform.

Another type of conflict in the book “The Book Thief” happens at the Hubermann home. Hans and Rosa Hubermann have been hiding Max Vandenburg  in their basement for a few years, recently in book he left. I think he left their home because he might have felt unsafe for himself, and if he didn’t want to get caught in their basement by the Nazi Party. If he got caught in the basement then Hans, Rosa and their foster daughter Liesel Meminger, would most likely be tortured and right after killed. In this paragraph the protagonist  is Hans and Rosa  and the antagonist is Max.     I think that later on in the story Hans, Rosa and Liesel will find Max lying on the street killed by the Nazi Party. Then they will feel guilty because they think they should have did more for him to stay.

This picture reminds me of the notes that Max left Hans, Rosa and Liesel, but they never got too see him after he left
Character vs Self
A third type of conflict is about Rudy feeling guilty about his father going to the Russian War.  Rudy was supposed to go to a special school, but Mr and Mrs Steiner said no. A few days later  Alex Steiner got a letter in the mail saying he had to go off to the Russian War. Rudy felt like he should have been the one to leave home away from his family, instead of his father.
Rudy attempts to go to Russia and find his father. In a conflict such as this the
Protagonist is Rudy’s feeling  and antagonist is Rudy.
I think that through time Rudy will not want to do anything without his father being there.

This picture reminds me of Rudy feeling guilty that it was his fault that his papa left.

Not a Drop to Drink

Do you like to drink dirty water? or would you rather have clean water ?
The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA)  is made up of many people in different communities.
Some of the people that work at the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority are Ben Van Diepenbeek, Deb Shewfelt, Alison Lobb, Larry Fulton, Kirk Livingston, Monica Walker, Roger Watt, Art Fitzgerald, Geoff Peach and Paul Carroll.

These people might be worried that other people in their community are dumping pollutions in the Maitland River, and they don’t want to end up drinking the water.
The Maitland Valley Watershed was formed in 1951.  If you don’t know what a Watershed is (Don’t worry my class and I had know idea either.) A watershed describes an area of land that contains a common set of streams and rivers that all drain into a single larger body of water, such as a larger river, a lake or an ocean.
The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority is held at,
1093 Marietta Street
Box 127
Wroxeter, ON   N0G 2X0.

The workers in the MVCA only check the water for e.coli. After the workers take a test from the water for e.coli; it usually takes about 24hrs for the e.coli test results to come back with the answers. There was a trace of e.coli in the  River of Walkerton many people died because of the e.coli in the water. There can e.coli found in little town/villages such as Bluevale or Belgrave if too many people are using the same well as each other.
E.coli is a very serious matter, My grandma had e.coli in her well a few years ago and me and my family always drink her water. With that I ask you again Do you like to drink dirty water? or would you rather have clean water?

This is a great picture of the Goderich harbor.

This is a great picture of the Wawanosh lake. (This is a very beautiful place in the summer).

This is a great picture of the lake in Gorrie

Alex Steiner,

Do you like a person who is friendly, thankful or concerned? If then you would like Alex Steiner. Alex is a character from the book “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak. He has a son named Rudy and he owns a clothing store.

I would describe Alex as feeling concerned. I described him as feeling concerned because he might be worried about his son Rudy. I think he might be worried about Rudy because Rudy might get himself in to a lot of trouble with the Nazi party. Rudy might get Alex in trouble from Alex trying to protect his son. I think that Alex is also thankful. I think this because Alex is thankful to have a business. He’s lucky to have a store so he can have money to feed Rudy and himself.
I would also describe Alex as friendly. I described him as being friendly, because he is very friendly to Liesel, Rudy and his customers.

Alex is in the Nazi party. Which means he has to know the importance’s of being responsible, when you are formed up. I am in air cadets. Being in Air Cadets is just like being in the Nazi Party. In Air Cadets you don’t have power like the Nazi Party does. The Nazi Party is killing people and burning books. Wingham Air Cadets does not burn books or kill people.

I think that the author included  Alex because Rudy is Liesel’s friend and Liesel’s foster parents are the other main characters. I also think that Markus included Alex because he is in the Nazi party and I think that Hans, Rosa and Alex will become friends and Alex well be able to tell the Hubermann’s if anything to do with Adolf Hitler is coming up.

I think that Alex has become the way he is with Rudy and his store because being in the Nazi Party means he had to kill people.  I think he has become more strict around Rudy because he has to teach Rudy that it is not alright to cover yourself with black charcoal and run around trying to be like someone on T.V (Jesse Owens a 4 Gold medalist winner in the Olympics).

I wonder if Alex well get kicked of the Nazi Party because of something that Rudy did?
I think this because Rudy is a very out going person and with his store and other duties Alex doesn’t have a lot of time to teach Rudy how to properly behave.  How would you feel if you were living the life of Alex Steiner?

This photo is a great example of what Alex and other men would have worn. Check out some more great photos on other web sites about what men wore back in 1945 and other years.
